ONE MASSAGE CAN CHANGE YOUR LIFE;
This is a very true statement as I know for myself personally. Without that first massage I wouldn’t be where I am today. A couple years before I started my journey as a masseur I was actually receiving treatment for a work injury at a Physio clinic, when I arrived for my treatment that day my Physio said he a student masseur doing some clinic hours and would I like to try a treatment. I said sure, I then got to lay there for an hour and experience one of the most soothing things I had ever had done, I mean I was so relaxed not only physically but mentally too, my muscles just felt so relieved of tension, they felt so rejuvenated and fresh from my gluteus to my neck which is the area’s she worked on that day. I do wish I could remember this ladies name because I would love to find and thank her for changing my life. If she wasn’t the quality person and masseur she was I could have had someone give me a bad experience, and in most cases most of us, when we have a bad experience we generally don’t do it again. In saying this I have had so many clients who had to be strongly persuaded to come for a session with me because of negative massage experiences, which gives me the amazing opportunity to give them a positive one. One of my favorite things as a massage practitioner is the opportunity to give someone their first experience of bodywork. It comes with a huge responsibility but it is a challenge I cherish because it’s not often you get to be a part of someones first experience and in our clinic we pride ourselves on this. So when I finished that very first massage I walked into my Physios office and said sorry mate but I don’t think I might need you anymore as my upper back injury hadn’t felt so good in weeks. Now I wasn’t righting his treatment off at all, because I knew without his treatments my back would not have responded to the massage as well. Remember my first article Melding Modalities. The Ideology started way back then. My Physio then referred me to an accredited massage practitioner which in turn got me back to full duties at work and sport ahead of schedule.
In the process of getting back to full capacity I was able to re-join my district reserves basketball team in our chase to the finals and this is where I really learnt the benefits of massage and its benefits for the athlete. My role in my team was the centre position which belongs to the tallest players on the team. This role I shared with another guy which we shared the minutes on court in game time for the season so far, but unfortunately he got injured two weeks before the grand final, which meant I was needed to play the whole game as we were up against a team that had two 36ers players, one of them 6FT 8 tall and another 6FT 10 tall. Now I’m 6FT 8 as well but I did have my work cut out for me. So before the final I expressed to my massage therapist I was concerned about, 1, my cardio to run out a whole game as I had been only doing half the game minutes, sharing them with our other big guy. 2, my conditioning to run out a whole game particularly because of my season being interrupted by my upper back injury. Well, Leslie said next, have you ever had your legs massaged? I said no I haven’t and she suggested to come in the afternoon of the grand final game three hours before the game, I said OK having no idea what I was in for. What Leslie did I will be for ever grateful both as a masseur and an athlete. She proceeded to massage my legs so deeply I thought she was going to damage me so that not only would I not be able to run in the game I thought I wouldn’t walk out of her clinic, but every time I questioned she just said trust me. Now normally when someone says trust me I get concerned as I have always believed trust is earned not asked for. Never the less I put my trust in her knowledge and hands. Well to cut a long story short when I went to that grand final game and even in the warm ups I knew something was different, my team mates and even myself were surprised how much more agile my dunks were, and again like my first ever massage my muscles felt fresh and rejuvenated. I played the game of my life
helping our team to a win coming back from 10 points down. My legs just felt like they wouldn’t fatigue. From that day forth my massage routine for my semi pro and reserves basketball was a full body 1 hour recovery massage mid-week, then two hours before the Saturday night game, a half hour deep tissue massage on my lower back, glutes and all my legs. This applied with all my other strategies for health, fitness and recovery enabled me to be free of fatigue and much less injury prone. I only wish I had this when I first started my journey to be a Pro athlete years before and who knows things could be quite different. But then I may not have become the practitioner I am today or even at all. My working life could have taken a completely different direction, and that’s the positive in the negative is that plan B worked out and I have now been the 36ers Remedial masseur for 7 seasons now.
So for myself and many, many of our clients including the Lady I wrote about in my second article about the importance of Hydration. Her experience with us totally changed her life in reducing and alleviating her migraines and quite possibly reducing opportunity for deceases to affect her later in life.
